History
Slyshift was born Oliver Flynn to a poor Irish couple living on the Lower Level of Bleaker. His father worked under a member of the Merchant Guild; Mr. Flynn was trader of mundane, harmless, but essential everyday items—most often food, occasionally clothing, dishware, etc. Oliver's "adaptation" was discovered when the boy, at the age of five, was attacked for a small bit of meat by a starving dog. Oliver immediately transformed into his vulpine form, killing the threatening animal. His mother witnessed this and, fearing for her son's life should hunters ever become aware of his mutation, resolved to keep him sheltered from the outside world. She and her husband held that their son had died, and proceeded to keep him indoors, mostly in their small underground basement. Oliver's animal instincts instilled in him a desire to escape; using his feral form to his advantage, he was able to sneak out during dark hours through a tunnel dug behind a loose stone in the basement wall. Poor as his family was, Oliver often found himself hungry or otherwise in need, and soon resorted to the natural inclination of his animal half: stealing. He found himself to be quite good at it, and began developing his skills in the field as much as possible. During "light hours," when his parents kept the artificial lights burning, he took to amusing himself with various puzzle toys his father had acquired through trade. Eventually he began taking apart, reworking, and combining these toys; this soon progressed to a development of his logical and symbol-language based skills, a cornerstone of his eventual vocation as a Coder.
Slyshift's childhood was largely uneventful, watched over as he constantly was by his mother, so he devoted his time to the development of his skills. Around the age of sixteen, he determined to go out on his own. Taking with him a few useful items he had found in his years of thievery, and leaving only a short, scrawled note behind, he went into the city and began his life as a thief. His skills soon gained attention, both of the wanted and unwanted sort. He changed his name to Seamus O'Malley to divert attention from his original identity—and his parents—and proceeded to take on a werefox sort of form for use in his thievery. Unlike his mother, he did not and does not fear hunters; he has enough skill at the arts of escape and concealment to keep himself from getting caught, and is well aware of this fact. Eventually, he began selling his skills as a thief-for-hire, soon gaining enough market that some level of protection was afforded him. His skills in coding also traffic well in the technological world of Bleaker; Seamus can as readily protect a patron from other thieves as thieve for them himself.
Currently, Seamus is the leader of a fair-sized band of thieves and coders for hire, who make their home in a small stretch of abandoned, condemned, gutted and otherwise uninhabitable (by most) buildings on the Lower Level of Bleaker. The adage "no honor among thieves" does not apply to Slyshift's band; the group makes it a point never to steal from its own, and treachery and betrayal among the members is punished with swift and immediate death by Seamus's own hand. To be in Slyshift's band is to be a member of a family, to which he is fiercely loyal and of which he is fiercely protective.
Personality
Seamus has a cheerful, surprisingly easygoing nature, a dry sense of humor, and a sharp tongue. He has a very strict code of honor to which he abides at all times, the main points of which are loyalty to those with whom one holds allegiance, the notion that promises may never be broken while upholding them remains at all possible, and the idea that a business transaction constitutes a promise. However, the fact remains that Seamus is a thief first and foremost: everything comes at a price, and his professionalism states that once a transaction is complete, no allegiance remains between his band and the buyer.
Despite his generally bright mood, Seamus is very professional in dealing with customers, and never takes any job lightly, nor does he allow frivolity or carelessness from his own or his band members' work.
Seamus is very confident in himself and his abilities, to the point of downright arrogance. This arrogance does not cloud his judgment, however: his views of himself, while proud, are incredibly realistic. As such, Seamus barely has a competitive bone in his body: he knows, not thinks, he is better than you are, and therefore has no need whatsoever to prove it to himself or to anyone else.
Powers
Seamus is a shapeshifter of the vulpine persuasion: his animal alternative is a red fox. Like many shifters, he is not limited to strictly full-human and full-animal forms, but rather has the ability to take on any mixture of forms in-between. Normally he takes on something of a "werefox" form: mostly human in anatomy with a foxlike facial structure (including fox ears), claws, a tail, quadrupedal legs (shorter thighs, longer feet with paws), and a full-body covering of fur. In this form he possesses full human intelligence with vulpine instincts. Werefox Seamus has vulpine acuity in his five main senses, advanced dexterity, and an animal-instinct sense of danger and proximity. He possesses the ability to converse with all vulpine species and a few canine and feline species (domestic cats and dogs, wolves, and small felines such as lynxes).
Seamus almost exclusively uses his werefox or feral fox forms; few have seen his human face in association with his identity. He uses his human form as a disguise of sorts, given that so few know to associate the face with the thief.
Strengths/Skills
Slyshift is a sneak-thief by trade, and an excellent one at that. His skills in thievery include, but are not limited to, lock picking, trap spotting, trap disarming, and sneaking. He has remarkable skills in coding: he is both an expert code breaker and a capable code writer. Slyshift is often able to scope, enter, plunder, and escape a target area before his presence is ever known of. In such cases that he is discovered, he is still likely to escape without being found. He has failed in only a few dozen "retrievals" during his career, and has yet to be apprehended.
Though Seamus prefers to get in and get out without incident or contact, he has gained skill with a blade in anticipation of unavoidable confrontation. His greatest skill is with midsize and shorter blades, such as his cutlass.
Weaknesses/Shortcomings
????
Equipment and Resources
Seamus carries a cutlass, by the name of Ironfang, on his back at all times. Ironfang is an heirloom of the Flynn family, though it was most likely a spoil of battle or return of trade rather than having been actually used by ancestral family members. Seamus stole the blade from his father before his departure from home. The blade of the weapon is made of thick, heavy steel and bears a single cutting edge, a sharply tapered point, and a slight curve; the single word "Ironfang" is etched crudely into the right flat of the blade near the hilt in sharp, angular letters. The guard is flat and circular in shape; the hilt is short, straight, and thick. Ironfang bears no knuckle guard.
As a tool for his code breaking, Seamus keeps a hand-held technological device with a small touch-operated screen, a few simple buttons, and several different wires protruding from the upper edge. He uses this to wire in to electronic locks; the device is fairly crude by Bleaker technology standards, and it is only by Seamus's knowledge of wires and coding that he is able to use it to any advantage. He keeps the device in a leather pouch on his belt at back of his right hip.
Seamus also keeps a set of lock picks and a multipurpose instrument similar to a Swiss army knife on his belt.
Physical Appearance
["Werefox"] This man is used to getting double-takes when seen about. Around six feet tall and weighing something like 180 pounds, he wears the form in which he is most comfortable: a werefox. His appearance is mostly human in anatomy with a snouted, whiskered, foxlike facial structure (including long, narrow fox ears), claws, a tail, quadrupedal legs (shorter thighs, longer feet with paws), and a full-body covering of fur. He has the usual color of a vulpus vulpus: mostly red-orange, with black on his hands and feet, the middle of his tail, and the tips of his ears. His snout, chin, chest, tail tip and insides of his ears sport a fluffier, white fur. His eyes are an oddly bright, orange-gold color, and twinkle with an obvious intelligence and smugness. Current outfit: brown canvas pants, a brown leather sort of jerkin, bandage-like wrappings from elbow to palm on both arms and around the middles of both feet. He wears a belt with various pouches, and a curved cutlass strapped to his back.
[Human] This man isn't one who gains a lot of second glances in the street. He is handsome, to be sure, with a shock of orange-red hair, fairly high cheekbones and a slightly cleft chin, but he doesn't put off an air of being in any way interesting. He's of average height, 5'10", and has average build, weighing in at a little under 160 pounds. His eyes are an oceanic shade of blue-green, usually sparkling with bright laughter. He is usually seen with a jovial, almost goofy smile upon his face. He looks rather like a bum, however: his chin is prickly with a few days' stubble, his hair short, scruffy, and unkempt. Currently, he's wearing dark brown jeans and a rumpled black t-shirt. As per his own usual he has heavy dark leather boots on his feet, fingerless dark leather gloves on his hands, and a thick, tan, wool-lined trench coat on his back. This coat is big and burly enough to hide most of the contents of its innumerable pockets, and also gives the young man the illusion of being a bit larger and more broad-shouldered than he actually happens to be.
[Fox] Well lookit that, it's a fox! A fairly common, if large, red fox, in fact: mostly red-orange, with black upon his paws and lower legs, mid-tail, and the tips of his ears. The bottom of his muzzle, his chest, the tip of his tail and the insides of his ears bear a considerably fluffier white fur. His eyes are a bright red-gold, and twinkle with an intelligence that is much more than vulpine. Despite his fluffiness, his fur is dusty and scruffy: he's an alley fox, and looks it.
